Painterly portraits made in Procreate: moody, surreal, quietly cinematic, with a little melancholy and a flash of pop.

Faces painted stroke by stroke. Lit like a film still, drifting somewhere surreal: armour and lace, lambs and lipstick, a quiet melancholy with a flash of pop.

    About

Yevgenya Balayan is a painter and digital painter based in Armenia. She builds her portraits stroke by stroke, keeping the brushwork visible, then pushes them somewhere moody and surreal: lit like a film still and punctuated by flashes of pop colour.

Her pictures return to a private cast of motifs: and , , , , and . They are tender and unsettling at once, as if a fairy tale has wandered into a fashion shoot. Next to the finished paintings sit her fan art and a sketchbook that is always open, where ideas are tested before they become paintings.

Her background spans Fine Arts, Art History, and Theory and Criticism, along with digital art and marketing. That mix shows in how she looks at images, and in how she writes about art, which she also publishes on Academia.edu (opens in a new tab).

She also teaches visual arts to teenagers at ACT College: Painting, Art History, Digital Art, and Visual Semiotics & Storytelling.

After a hiatus, she is returning to painting and posting in 2026, and this is where the new work lands first. Every finished piece is signed with her red, hand-drawn GENIUS stamp.
